Mushroom Naan: A Flavorful Twist on a Classic
IntroductionWho says naan is just for butter and chutney? Let’s elevate this Indian bread with a burst of mushroom flavor. This Mushroom Naan recipe is a perfect blend of earthy mushrooms and the soft, chewy texture of naan. It’s a fantastic vegetarian option and a great way to impress your guests.
Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon active dry yeast1 teaspoon sugar1 cup warm water2 tablespoons plain yogurt1 teaspoon salt2 tablespoons olive oil1 cup chopped mushrooms1/2 onion, finely chopped2 cloves garlic, minced1/2 teaspoon red chili powder1/4 teaspoon garam masalaFresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)InstructionsMake the Dough
1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add flour, salt, yogurt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Prepare the Mushroom Filling
1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add onions and saute until translucent.
2. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
3. Add chopped mushrooms, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook until mushrooms are tender and most of the liquid has evaporated.
4. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
Assemble and Cook the Naan
1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 6 equal portions.
3. Roll out each portion into an oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
4. Spread a layer of mushroom filling evenly over the rolled-out dough.
5. Fold the edges of the dough towards the center to enclose the filling.
6. Place the naan on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
7. Brush the tops of the naan with melted butter or olive oil.
8. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
9. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with your favorite curry or chutney.
Tips For a richer flavor, use a mix of button and cremini mushrooms.
