Mushroom SamosasIntroWho doesn’t love a good samosa? Crispy, flaky pastry filled with a delicious mixture of flavors. Today, we’re putting a unique spin on this classic treat with a mushroom filling. These Mushroom Samosas are packed with umami goodness and are perfect for a vegetarian or vegan snack or appetizer. Let’s dive in!
Ingredients:For the Dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon salt1/2 cup ghee or vegetable oilWater, as neededFor the Filling:
1 tablespoon olive oil1 onion, finely chopped2 cloves garlic, minced1-inch piece ginger, grated1 pound mixed mushrooms (cremini, shiitake, oyster), finely chopped1 teaspoon garam masala1/2 teaspoon cumin powder1/4 teaspoon chili powderSalt and pepper to taste1/4 cup fresh cilantro, choppedInstructions:Making the Dough:
1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
2. Add ghee or oil and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
Preparing the Filling:
1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
2. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
3. Stir in garlic and ginger, cook for another minute.
4. Add chopped mushrooms and cook until all the liquid has evaporated and the mushrooms are browned.
5. Add garam masala, cumin powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute.
6. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro. Let the mixture cool completely.
Assembling and Frying the Samosas:
1. Divide the dough into equal-sized balls.
2. Roll out each ball into a thin circle.
3. Cut each circle into half to form a semicircle.
4. Spoon a generous amount of filling onto the wider end of the semicircle.
5. Fold the dough over the filling to form a triangle.
6. Seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
7. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
8. Fry the samosas in batches until golden brown and crispy.
9. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
Serve hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.Tips:
For a spicier filling, increase the amount of chili powder.If you don’t have fresh cilantro, you can use dried cilantro.You can also bake the samosas in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.To reheat leftover samosas, heat them in a preheated oven or air fryer until crispy.Enjoy your Homemade Mushroom Samosas!
